Retinitis pigmentosa; pathological findings in two cases.
ALTHOUGH retinitis pigmentosa is a fairly common affection and an important cause of blindness, relatively few cases have been examined histologically. Cogan (1950) found some twenty cases in the literature and himself described three more. The condition most commonly shows a recessive mode of inheritance (Sorsby, 1951), and all the cases so far described for which family histories are recorded...
متن کاملVitamin D Deficiency and its Relation with Cancer in Children
Vitamin D deficiency is known as the most common nutritional deficiency. It is created during infancy due to different factors, including decreased dietary intake, decreased dermal synthesis, malabsorption, enzyme-inducing medications, and exclusive breastfeeding. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with poor bone health such as rickets and osteomalacia in children. Despite vitamin D plays an im...
متن کاملRetinitis Pigmentosa Associated with Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency
We report a case of new onset retinitis pigmentosa (RP) associated with a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in a 63-year-old African-American male who presented with worsening night vision over a period of five years. The pathogenesis of G6PD-mediated oxidative biological damage is reviewed and a mechanism for the onset of retinal disease proposed.
متن کاملRetinitis pigmentosa in abetalipoproteinemia: Effects of vitamin A.
Two patients with abetalipoproteinemia are shown to develop a serum vitamin A deficiency when maintained on a normal diet. This deficiency leads to a severe impairment of vision, including abnormalities of dark adaptation and the electroretinogram which involve both rod and cone receptor systems. Massive oral doses of vitamin A can reverse these abnormalities. Cone function recovers more rapidl...
متن کاملStudy of Patterns of Inheritance in Affected Patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa in Iranian Populations
Background and Aims: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most common form of inherited retinal degeneration, photoreceptors loss of which in the retina causes visual loss. The purpose of the present study was to determine patterns of inheritance in RP patients in Yazd to help the health professional for designing suitable laboratory testing for the high risk families. Materials and Methods: Thirt...
